Ever wonder what the first Lash extensions were made of?

They were made of kohl.

Kohl is a black powder, usually antimony sulfide or lead sulfide, used as eye makeup especially in Eastern countries.....that's right:

The Origin Of Lash Extensions

The FIRST "Lash Extensions" were EYELINER. Conceived amidst the sun-soaked sands of ancient Egypt, where beauty was both an art and a legacy, The PRIMARY purpose of wearing "Kohl" was for both practical and spiritual purposes. Initially, it was used to protect the eyes from the sun's glare and to keep them dry, and free from disease. However, it also held significant cultural and spiritual value, including warding of the evil eye--which is why ALL the most self-respecting Pharoah's wore it....so Lash Extensions have a fascinating history which (as wearers) deserves our time and attention to look into.

Here’s a brief overview:

Early Beginnings

  • We've already discussed Egypt but later, ancient Roman women adopted the practice as well and began using a variety of substances to enhance their eyes as well.

20th Century--Lash Extension Evolution

  • 1920s: The modern concept of lash extensions using hair-like fibers began to take shape. Film industry makeup artists started using false lashes on actresses to create a dramatic look for the camera.

  • 1930s: Hollywood icons like Clara Bow popularized false eyelashes, leading to the development of strip lashes that could be easily applied.

2000s Onward

  • 2000s: The trend shifted toward semi-permanent lash extensions, which are individually applied to natural lashes. This method gained popularity for its natural look and longevity.

  • Innovations: Various techniques emerged, including mink, silk, and synthetic materials, allowing for a range of styles and effects.

Modern Era

  • Widespread Popularity: In recent years, lash extensions have become a mainstream beauty treatment, with salons (like 3D Volume Lash & Brow Studio) specializing in them popping up globally.

Today, the evolution of lash extensions continues, with ongoing innovations in materials and application methods, making them a staple in many beauty routines.
